11:05AM - For the particular benefit of historienne (and others)…

Since she is a connoisseuse of fictional tragic ecclesiastical eye-candy, here's some I've posted to a Notre Dame community I joined of late:

8:53PM - Dosto–WTF?!!!

In an IMDb discussion, I described my favourite character in Victor Hugo's Notre Dame de Paris as "Dostoevskian". I think people generally know what that means.
I had a response from someone asking how I could say that, since Dostoevskii was only a kid when it was written, and the book was by Hugo
Aaaaargh!

On the life front, my current contract ended today and I haven't a clue what I'm doing next week. Nothing yet from the agency.

2:10PM - 'Notre Dame de Paris': the classic cassock-ripper

I've recently re-entered a beloved old fandom of mine, via a forum on fanfiction.net: Victor Hugo's Notre Dame de Paris, better known to movie-goers as The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Ringing a few bells... )

5:53PM - I have succumbed to the cuteness…

…of a toy Mouse Lemur on eBay. The lemur arrived today, and is now called 'Ida', because she looks very like the famous wee fossil beastie in the reconstruction.

5:57PM - "So where's the rest of me?" asks my default icon…

This is just fascinating: a substantial portion of Rosa may have been found! I've heard of patients bed-blocking before, but 90 years in the same hospital…?!
And as you can see above, her head is definitely here on livejournal! Folow the links in the Spiegel article, and there are some fascinating pics of the preserved body, which has a rather magnificent 'ancient stone sculpture' look, and an x-ray.

Current mood: weirdly fascinated

12:00AM - It's the Red Shoes - they just keep dancing…

Rampant æstheticism, great dancing, gorgeous costumes, and (in 1948!) an implicitly gay hero! The Red Shoes are back, and brighter than ever, thanks to Martin Scorsese!
More on it here, and here.
I've pre-ordered the restored DVD!
My own article on it is on my website, with IMDb comments here.

8:39PM - 'Being Human'

Thanks to Lisa, I'm now getting to see this delightful BBC 3 comedy-drama.

Mitch and George are 2 young lads who work shifts at the hospital and share a house in Bristol: a haunted house (even if it is pink outside). The resident ghost is a girl of similar age, Annie. They get on brilliantly: after all, Mitch is a vampire ex-soldier from WW1, and George is a werewolf. The stories involve George coming to terms with his inner wolf, Annie solving the mystery of her own death, and Mitch trying to stay 'on the wagon' blood-wise, and uncovering a conspiracy in the vampire community. Great fun, and a second series has been commissioned!

6:26PM - Taking up Sharikkamur's good idea…

Taking up Sharikkamur's good idea:
This week we have had Comic Relief cake sales every day at work, and today we had the raffle and wearing non-work clothes. All the activities were co-ordinated by the wonderful Joyce, a Whovian and Hammer fan, and thus a Good Thing!

And I had another squirrel encounter on the way back from work. Squirrels are always fun!

8:15PM - Will the real William Shakespeare…?

There's been some interesting coverage in the press about an alleged 'new' Shakespeare portrait:
We can't capture Shakespeare
A new view: is this the real Shakespeare?
I've taken part in some of the discussions under my usual nom de guerre:
A true Shakespeare 'portrait'? Surely not...
Shakespeare 'portrait' latest

Some people think the handsome mystery man may be Thomas Overbury, but Overbury is dark and beakier. I think he's more likely to be Henry Wriothesley, Earl of Southampton: the family who own him are descendants, and have another picture of him as a fetchingly androgynous teenager, similar to the miniature in the Fitzwilliam. The hairline, set of the mouth and general physiognomy are comparable with Henry: compare the picture of him in the Tower (with matching cat!) and with armour. (In fact, I played with PhotoShop and transparent layers to compare the face in the new picture with these 2 Southampton ones, and they match strongly.)

6:47PM - Jane Austen and Zombies

I forgot to post this t'other week, but I just love it… Jane Austen with added Zombies. Anything that might make the over-hyped Austen entertaining must be welcomed. Personally, I think Mansfield Park needs zombies: it would explain Fanny Price, and the West Indian plot element helps. And how much better if the "single man in possession of a fortune" was a recent arrival from Transylvania

9:14PM - John Updike RIP

I was sorry to hear that John Updike has died. I've only read one of his novels, but it was lovely – Gertrude & Claudius. It's Hamlet fanfic, and shows what good fanfic can do, in terms of enriching and expanding the fictional universe, in this case by referring to earlier versions of the story.

9:32PM - Mediæval Squirrels

A question here about mediæval wildlife:
Given the on-going debate over grey squirrels here in the UK, I'm interested in squirrel history. I suspect, from artistic evidence, that there may have been grey and black squirrels in Europe in the Middle Ages, but that they may have been hunted to extinction for fur. The Codex Manesse (German, c. 1300) shows rather demonic-looking black squirrels in some of its illustrations. Also, the fur known as vair, generally regarded as squirrel, is depicted in heraldry, and in mediaeval art, as alternating back and belly pelts in blue and white: which is more suggestive of grey squirrels than reds. There was also a fur known as gris (grey), the animal source of which has not been identified. (Guilhem IX of Poitou and Aquitaine sang of renouncing "vair e gris e sembelis" - vair and grey and sable furs - in the early 12C.) I'd like to know if anyone else has any evidence as to what vair and gris were.

11:00PM - An interesting book…

I was lately in the bookshop at here at the University of Hogwarts, splurging with some book-tokens I still had left from my birthday and last Yule, and picked up this:
Diana Wallace, The Woman's Historical Novel: British Women Writers, 1900-2000 (2005).
It's well worth a look (like historical films, historical fiction is often far more revealing of the time that produced it than the ostensible setting!), although she's far too kind to Philippa Gregory, attributing to her some kind of Marxist viewpoint in her 18C novels, and not examining her awful 16C ones.

The cover is very colourful, too!

8:09PM - Seasonal Cheer

More reasons I'm glad to be back in work: Office Secret Santa! Office tinsel!
And here's some festive fun from that sturdy vessel, The Ship of Fools!
I love the 2007 version, too, especially Maria the Memory Stick. She lights up!
